Rep. Pettengill Encourages Internship Program
(DES MOINES) —Monday Rep. Dawn Pettengill (R-Mount Auburn) announced information regarding the Innovation and Commercialization Internship Program. This program was passed by the legislature during the 2007 session. House File 829 which Rep. Pettengill voted in favor of, appropriates money for targeted industries internships.
Students hired as interns will be paid for their work as awards are available up to $3,100 for any single internship. A company can apply for a maximum of three internships or a maximum of $9,300 award per company.
The program is aimed at connecting undergraduate students with current businesses as well as up-and-coming industries in the fields of biosciences, advanced manufacturing and information technology. State officials foresee a worker shortage in these areas and are projecting that within the next five years there will be more than 150,000 unfilled, highly-skilled positions available throughout the state.
Rep. Pettengill is encouraging students and industries to take advantage of this new program.
“I really hope that we can bring our businesses and our students together more effectively through this program,” said Rep. Pettengill. “Not only does this help our economy and development in those areas, but it is just another way we’re working hard to ensure our Iowa-educated students have more opportunities to stay in our great state.”
The program is available for students at all of Iowa’s public and private colleges, state universities and community colleges. Program funds are available for summer 2008 internships. For more information, Rep. Pettengill encouraged people to visit www.iowalifechanging.com/business.
