Pettengill Votes to Get Tough on Illegal Immigrants
4/18/2008
(DES MOINES)—Legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal aliens passed the Iowa House on Wednesday. Rep. Dawn Pettengill (R-Mount Auburn) supported the bill, House File 2686, which addresses some of the serious concerns with illegal immigrants in the state of Iowa.
HF 2686 requires employers to verify the identity of each new employee and puts forth penalties if they do not fulfill the requirements of verifying each new hire. The bill also protects the citizens of Iowa by prohibiting an unauthorized alien to be eligible for bail when charged with a criminal offense. Instead, the law enforcement agency must notify the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"Illegal immigration is an important issue that Iowans care about,” said Rep. Pettengill. “I’m pleased the Legislature took a stand and passed this legislation.”
The bill passed the House, 84 voting aye. It will now be sent to the Senate for consideration.
