Pettengill Releases Information on Tax Extensions
8/5/2008
(DES MOINES)—Today Rep. Dawn Pettengill (R-Mount Auburn) released information regarding the Iowa Department of Revenue’s plan to extend the time that Iowa taxpayers affected by tornadoes and flooding have to file state tax returns and pay state taxes.
Pettengill said the Iowa Department of Revenue has extended the deadline to August 29, 2008 for returns and payments due after May 24, 2008, and before August 23, 2008. Any tornado or flood affected taxpayer will not be subject to any penalty for failure to file or failure to pay. Additionally, interest will not be due on payments made by August 29 , 2008.
The taxes that are impacted by this extension are (please note that this is for Iowa taxes only):
- Withholding tax
- Corporation income tax
- Franchise tax
- Sales and use tax, including the automobile rental excise tax and the special equipment tax
- Hotel and motel tax
- Environmental protection charge
- Inheritance tax, including the generation skipping transfer tax and the qualified use inheritance tax
- Motor fuel and special fuel tax
- Cigarette and tobacco tax
“I’m pleased that the Department is extending the tax deadline for victims of the flooding and tornadoes,” said Pettengill. “It’s important that we do all we can to immediately help the Iowans who were affected by these disasters.”
With this summer’s excessive rain, Iowans all over the state have been affected by floods and severe weather. If an affected taxpayer receives a penalty or interest notice from the Department of Revenue, the taxpayer should call the telephone number on the notice. Additionally, a taxpayer who files a paper return needs to make a notation on the return stating, “Taxpayer affected by tornadoes/flooding.”
